The 12-member committee had to check the blatant violations of PSQCA laws, quality, standards, existing food and drug laws and escalating prices of essential items, especially during the month of Ramazan.
Consumers had hoped that the CRC would protect them against escalating prices and take appropriate action against the manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers involved in malpractice, especially during Ramazan.
Unfortunately, the committee has not even met once and the consumers continued to be cheated and poisoned by substandard, adulterated and counterfeit products.
The CPC stated that due to the lack of consumer protection laws and enforcement of food and drug laws, the prices of essential items were rising every day and the markets were flooded with substandard, adulterated and counterfeited edibles, beverages and medicines.
The manufacturers are also using non-food grade plastics, colours and second-hand tins and plastic bottles for packing food items and beverages and the consumers are being cheated by glossy and misleading advertisements.
The CPC also drawn the attention of the Governor to the Consumers Protection Ordinance, Sindh, which was signed by him on August 12, 2004, but it had not been presented to the Provincial Assembly for ratification. As such, the bill lapsed and Sindh was still without a consumer's protection law, it said.
The CPC requested the Governor to ensure that the Ordinance was presented to the Provincial Assembly without any further delay.
